“When It Wasn’t” by Wild Fire
Written for Tongue Tied Magazine, June 2022
Hailing from the state of Texas, sisters Kelli and Kayla Iutzwig - otherwise known as Wild Fire - have recently released their latest single “When It Wasn’t”, a confessional ballad about a love story that has ultimately lost its spark.
Starting slow, reading as more of an explanation as to how this character has moved on, this track follows with a burst of energy pursuing the idea that this relationship is, in fact, over. It’s not your typical break up song or longing for a failed relationship, but expresses acceptance that it’s settled.
The one lyric that resonates with me the most is ‘I finally dyed my hair back brown like you always told me not to’. Whether you’ve been in one or multiple relationships, you know the opinions of your partner can be so overpowering that sometimes you’ll do almost anything to please them, even if it leaves you at a disadvantage. Finding this type of redemption after a break up can be one of the most freeing things in the world and I applaud anyone who is able to reach this stage after a relationship falls apart.
With their pop vocals and upbeat guitar strings, Wild Fire could be the next big name in country music. Having already gained recognition from the likes of Country Music Television, Houston Rodeo’s Rodeo Rockstar competition, NRG Stadium and Arena, even Dolly Parton’s Dollywood amusement park, Wild Fire’s career has no other way to go but up.
