“My Psychic Said” by Mackenzie Day
Written for Tongue Tied Magazine, May 2022
Berklee College of Music student, Mackenzie Day, has recently released the lead single, "My Psychic Said", off of her upcoming sophomore album.
Telling the story of a runaway bride who contemplates the wise words of their psychic, Mackenzie Day sings "My psychic said dreams can tell the future / And know if that is true / Then I guess I'll see you at the altar". It isn't until this fictional bride begins walking down the aisle that she realizes what her future is about to hold. Mackenzie's bold vocals are enough to shake you to your core and force you to believe the honest message this song puts out into the world.
"My Psychic Said" is about accepting change and embracing a future that is different from the one we originally planned for ourselves. This track is layered with raw, emotional energy and a colorful and steady guitar accompanied with a heart-beat mimicking drumline. Finding influence from other artists and creating something completely new, Mackenzie Day holds absolutely nothing back.
At only 22 years old, Mackenzie has such an effortless way with words and couples them with a beautiful production of alternative-style melodies and a grunge-like aesthetic. Claiming to follow a "non-conformist" perspective, Mackenzie Day is one of the first female, solo artists I've see go along with the genre-bending trend we've seen in current day music. Her previous releases have a much funkier, pop sound than what we have just been introduced to and I'm hoping to hear these two sides of her expression collide in her upcoming album.
